Where is Steamboat Bay and how do I get there?
Steamboat Bay is located on remote Noyes Island in Southeast Alaska, about 90 minutes from Seattle via Ketchikan. From Ketchikan, guests travel by chartered floatplane directly to the lodge.
How do I get from Ketchikan to the lodge?
Our team meets you at Ketchikan International Airport and assists with luggage and transfers. From there, a short floatplane flight brings you to the lodge’s private dock.
What is included in my trip package?
Packages typically include lodging, guided fishing, meals, fish processing, fishing gear, outerwear, boots, open bar service, and transportation between Ketchikan and the lodge. Airfare to Ketchikan, fishing licenses, gratuities, and select upgrades are not included.
Do I need an Alaska fishing license?
Yes. Guests age 16 and older must have a valid Alaska fishing license, and a King Salmon stamp if targeting Kings. Our team assists with the process prior to arrival.
What is the weather like and what should I pack?
Summer temperatures typically range from 50 to 70 degrees, with changing coastal conditions. We recommend layered clothing, casual lodge wear, and comfortable shoes. Fishing gear and outerwear are provided. See our packing guide for additional information.
Can I extend my trip or visit other destinations?
Yes. Many guests choose to spend additional time in Ketchikan or elsewhere in Southeast Alaska before or after their stay.
Fishing Experience
What fish can I catch at Steamboat Bay?
The waters around Steamboat Bay are known for King Salmon, Silver Salmon, halibut, lingcod, and several species of rockfish. Availability varies by season.
What are the fishing limits?
Fishing limits are set by the State of Alaska and the International Pacific Halibut Commission and may vary by species and season. Please refer to our Fish Chart and Limits page for current guidelines.
What is a typical day like?
Days begin with breakfast before heading out on the water with your guide. Fishing typically includes morning and afternoon sessions, with the option to return to the lodge. Evenings are spent enjoying dinner, drinks, and time together. Sample Itinerary
Do I need fishing experience?
Not at all. Our guides work with all experience levels and tailor the day to your comfort and skill level.
How many guests are on each boat?
Most boats accommodate up to four guests, allowing for a more personalized and comfortable experience.
How far do you travel to fish each day?
Steamboat Bay is located just minutes from some of Southeast Alaska’s most productive fishing grounds, allowing you to spend more time fishing and less time traveling.
Should I bring my own fishing gear?
No. We provide all rods, reels, tackle, bait, boots, and outerwear. You are welcome to bring personal gear if you prefer.
How do I get my fish home?
Our team cleans, vacuum seals, flash freezes, and packs your catch for travel. Most guests bring fish home as checked luggage.
Should I be concerned about seasickness?
Waters around Steamboat Bay are generally more protected than open ocean areas, but conditions can vary. Guests prone to motion sickness may wish to consult their doctor prior to travel.
Lodge & Amenities
What are the accommodations like?
Steamboat Bay accommodates up to 24 guests across The Lodge and The Residence, both handcrafted by local artisans. Rooms feature private bathrooms, comfortable bedding, and views of the surrounding water and forest.
What amenities are available?
Guests enjoy Wi-Fi, daily housekeeping, sauna and hot tubs, gourmet dining, open bar, lounge spaces, and access to trails. Reference our guest services page for additional details.
Is this a good trip for families or non-fishing guests?
Yes. In addition to fishing, guests enjoy wildlife viewing, photography, exploring the island, and relaxing at the lodge.
What wildlife might I see?
Common sightings include humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, seals, bald eagles, black bears, and deer.
Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
Yes. Our culinary team can accommodate most dietary needs with advance notice.
Is alcohol available?
Yes. Guests enjoy an open bar with wine, beer, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages throughout their stay.
What gratuity is customary?
Gratuities are at your discretion. Many guests choose to tip guides and staff separately based on their experience.
